about

all songs written and performed by chris.

this is a complete departure from my previous project, being a guitar-centric concept album. it was recorded sporadically over the past year—in total, 19 songs were documented and 14 remain. intended to amalgamate a live studio feel with a more modern, psych-pop sound, it was written with a classic 5-piece band in mind but the production modern. midi instruments and synth textures aided that. electric guitar was directly influenced by classic guitar bands and country music (grady martin comes to mind). all in all, i had a blast creating this album and learned an awful lot in the process.

thanks for listening!

about

Chris Kelly Austin, Texas

When you want genuine music—music that will come right home to you like a bad quarter, suffuse your system like strychnine whisky, go right through you like Brandreth's pills, ramify your whole constitution like the measles, and break out on your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose,--when you want all this, just smash your piano, and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!

Track Name: Lose Yourself
does she make you feel handsome
hips are wide as she strides
come on, float this pride
boy make it sing

you give and you take
and you've made your mistakes
it's the benefit of keeping near
all those things you'd love...

love to leave behind, that you'd love to leave behind

get out and feel
what there is... (and isn't)
find that there's a place
outside your mind

does he make you feel
a little crazy fanatic or wild
polarized by some manliness
you find; seek like freaks

magnetic words
shaped by mine
throw off these lines
your ship is wasting precious time

we'll we've
made our mistakes
but we still give and we take
it's the benefit of keeping near
all those things we love...

love to leave behind, that we'd love to leave behind

get out and feel
what there is... (and isn't)
find that there's a place
outside your mind

(love to leave behind... that we'd love to leave behind)
Track Name: Put Out
you've been put out
you've been put up with;
you put out all the same
it's these doubts, doubts that are to blame
if feelings go
there's no sense in shame
and that's how
how we, change

you've been stood up
you've been stood up to
yet you stand out all the while
it's this fist inside the glove
that holds the fire
if you're not your mind
your mind's made up
with change, yeah with, change

you move on in
and i move out with
all sense of time
like snow we fall
but melt like ice
in the morning sun
it's alright, we're alright

you've been put out
you've been put up with;
you put out all the same
it's these doubts, doubts that are to blame
you bring home styles
to build that frame
and that's how
how we, change
Track Name: Small Kings
when ground shakes
that's all it takes
to lose this town, so i
draw up to you

of the many of us
who display a certain fuss:
over whether or not
you can be more than a... small king

and we take away from our world
when it's never ours to take
ride it out as halter breaks; ride it away
on your stakes

you're a local in a tourist town
she's a handful all the way around
and as frugal as any man you always take
what you can

and i eat with my eyes when i'm hypoglycemic
my body shakes even though i know you can't read it
quarters turn over moons
and i begin to fix that affection
of fooling around with you (what a dream)

we all want to be: small kings
we all want to be: tall
we all want to ride on our
dreams

when we bend and you flip
wit's laid on awfully thick;
it's hard doing time as a small king
but i give and i take which is more than i'd ever make
in a fake world as a real king

we ride out from dreams made for small... kings
